• Despite having less than 6% of the world's population, more than 60% of the world's illegal drugs are consumed in the US.
• Substance abuse costs the United States $237.5 billion every year.

• Courts have upheld the rights of employers to require pre-employment and employment-based testing for any job. Substance abuse testing can be done in any of the following situations: pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, follow-up and return to duty.
• Escalating costs from drug and alcohol abuse are causing many private companies to follow the urgings of the Federal Government and institute non-mandatory substance programs.
• Workplace drug testing has resulted in a 57% decline in the number of workers testing positive between 1987 and 1994.
